If Joe hits John, is it fair for John to respond by hitting Joe? What about a more extreme example: If Joe kills John, would it be a fair response for someone (obviously not John!) to respond by killing Joe? How should a society deal with violent crimes and violent criminals? Should we lock Joe away in prison? Try to make him into a better person? Punish him with physical harm? Isolate him from all other human beings? Or is the best approach to justice simply to follow the idea of "an eye for an eye"? In our course, "Violent Crime/Violent Punishment," we will try to find answers to these questions by discussing real cases, real punishments, real crimes and real criminals.
